DIY Little Passports: El Salvador
Hola from our latest stop on the World Explorers Club! We’re towards the end of the year on our journey, and have come to the “Land of Volcanoes” in El Salvador! Sadly it wasn’t even labeled on our illustrated wall map! My husband actually spent two years there on a mission, so it was really cool for him to sit down with our Explorer and get her excited about this tiny bit mighty country in Central America when she opened her package.
In This Package
Thankfully we had at least 2 books for kids about El Salvador, but I had to really reach on this one with books about soccer, and books about Volcanoes. We are looking forward to going to one of our favorite restaurants in Provo that serves the iconic Salvadoran authentic pupusas! Souvenirs were flash cards and story cards.
What a hot mess! The package felt like it was missing something since it had one small souvenir and no activities, but I sent it off anyway. A couple of days later, I looked at the plans for next month and realized I had bought something else for El Salvador and *forgot to include it!* I remade the address labels, typed up a note about what was in it (and forgot to enclose the note before sealing it shut so I had to just put it on the outside), taped all that onto recycled packaging, and lazily left it at her door!
Receiving the Mail
It’s kind of crazy there right now, my husband was telling me about all the people fleeing El Salvador so that their families will be safe from gangs and violent crime. It is highly fertile land with seriously kind and generous people, and yet one of the highest rates of homicide in the world… It’d be neat to share some of my husband’s mission photos with our daughter, but we’ll need to wait for a few months before Daddy’s available. How It’s Going
On Christmas Eve we had an early dinner at one of our favorite Provo restaurants, El Mexsal! They cook authentic El Salvadoran dishes as well as Mexican, hence the mashup of a name. Below are our favorite pupusas, their fried fish plate, and platanos fritos that the kids all tried! Our Explorer was a bit full, but said she enjoyed it.
