DIY Little Passports: France

Bonjour! It’s a fun (and delicious) adventure this month from France in our home-made kits for the World Explorers Club project. Our daughter (now 8 years old) has learned about several different cultures and wonders of our world, and we’ve now come to one of those most visited places in the world!

There are quite a lot of references on France at our library! I really enjoy the “This Is..” series by Miroslav Sasek (I got to preview his work in This Is Ireland back when there was a package on Ireland and it impressed me. The details he decides to share here in Paris with children are so fun to me, and I love the stylized whimsy of his illustrations.

How It’s Going

The only book L had a hard time with was “Paris: City Trails” because it includes stuff she thought was scary, like somewhat macabre ghost stories and info on the catacombs including colored photographs spanning a full 2-page spread. We both LOVED the Tasting Paris book which was more just “eating with our eyes” rather than reading because the photographs of these gourmet foods are seriously gorgeous. Definitely don’t dive in on an empty stomach! Her favorite part and really the first thing she did was build her 3D model of the Eiffel Tower! Her brothers actually broke into her room while she was in school and dismantled it by snapping most of the pieces in half… I knew she would be heartbroken, so I rebuild it by taping all the broken pieces but it didn’t look too bad afterwards.
