15 Years Getaway

Roses are red,

Violets are blue

It took 15 years to

Hike the Y with you! šŸ˜†

Jer and I are celebrating our fifteenth wedding anniversary! For this milestone we wanted to go big with an international vacation, or a Zion National Park tripā€”but weā€™ve learned from 15 years of marriage that change is constant and to be flexible. Big Plans fell apart, but we still wanted to make our marriage and each other a priority. I needed this time away with just Jeremy, so we planned a local getaway to have some fun and appreciate the day our lives changed forever.

Salt Lake City Romantic Getaway

Dessert First

While we waited for dinner, we walked to a nearby German shop Jer has been wanting to take me to. Siegfriedā€™s Delicatessen on 20 W 200 S. They carry quality meats, freshly made desserts, classic lunch/dinner fare, and specialty items imported from Germany. Jer said they even have their own exclusive recipe for sausage. We got a bunch of chocolates that his buddy had recommended, and split a perfectly flaky and delicious apple strudel. Dessert before dinner was such a fun way to start our anniversary!

A Special Meal

Our favorite sushi restaurant in Salt Lake is called Takashi. Weā€™ve tried all the other restaurants on Market Street over the years, and keep coming back to this one. Braving traffic, paying expensive parking, and waiting a little over an hour to get a table was worth it after having this delicious sushi! When we first met, Jer hated fish and certainly wouldnā€™t try it raw; I was way more adventurous and had sushi regularly. Now itā€™s established that I donā€™t eat raw sushi (blame an unfortunate incident with sea urchin years ago), and Jer samples all the nigiri and anything with tentacles.

Luxurious Bed and Breakfast

In looking for a place to stay near Provo, we looked into the Grand Hotel ($$$$), Ellerbeck (no rooms/small), and Art City Inn (only pet friendly remained). Nowhere else compares for the price and amenities to Inn on the Hill. I felt like a queen being absolutely spoiled here. It was very clean, the historic mansion is well maintained, and it felt classy and true to the original style without being thematic. This inn is ideal for a romantic getaway:

  • A stately and perfectly functional fireplace (plus it was elegant) ā€” this was my favorite feature of our room this time!
  • A comfortable and giant king sized four poster bed
  • A giant jetted tub for relaxing baths
  • Just the right lighting and a view of the city with Large windows
  • Ideal comfort in soft fuzzy bath robes
  • Gourmet breakfast made to order
  • Complementary Snacks and drinks
  • Outdoor spaces with fountain, garden, and fire pit

Enjoying the Outdoors

Apparently we still pass for Newlyweds because thatā€™s what several people asked us and were shocked that we have kids at home haha (thank you L for watching your brothers!).

Itā€™s taken 15 years but we finally hiked the Y together! The little dabs of fall were a welcome surprise. The trail now has signs at every turn with encouragement (ā€œKeep going!ā€), little factoids about the history of painting or lighting the Y, the local wildlife or plants, and tips for hiking. We tried both options to hike to the top and bottom of the Y. Jer just recovered from an illness, and I am still working my knees from my bike injury, so this steep hike was a challenge for both of us. We tackled it together and took lots of breaks, and I loved holding his hand.

Jer went to the doctor a couple days ago and nearly put the nurses in a panic with how high his blood pressure was. The doctor put him on a strict dash diet (Jer calls it the Flavorless diet). It scares me when I realize how fragile our lives are and how easily I could lose him, and how much Iā€™m depending on God to take care of things because I sure donā€™t have a clue.

This time we have together to connect deeply means even more to me; we really never know how long we have and it just makes me hold him closer and longer.

Love, Kat
