Two Little Boys and Trains

Every morning when I wake up for the past month I feel a little hand on my face and the sweet little voice attached to the hand says, “Mom, trains! Trains!” He looks at them all day, plays in slow motion, and does all the sound effects—much like Big Brother played with cars at that age.

Playing with Train Tracks

Playing with wooden train tracks

We like setting up their wooden train tracks in loops on the floor. Daddy is much better at the configurations, by this is one I made to copy him!

Motorized Train Tracks

Then of course there’s the battery-operated Thomas train track that Big Brother received last Christmas, which takes a while to set up but has a high payoff when they watch it go round and round.

Train Table

Even our trips to the Art Museum get “derailed” once we get to the train exhibit and they can’t stop playing at the train table! I really like the wooden cargo pieces that you can stick stuff in.

Trains on the Coffee Table

We went to Ikea and they found a toy train set that I had to come home with because they broke my heart when I put it back and they started crying. It wasn’t a whiny or bratty cry, it was serious sadness with the biggest puppy dog eyes and “Please Mom, no…” I wasn’t planning on getting any toys but they had done so well in the store for hours. Baby Boy clung to that train set all the way to the car, even whilst strapping him into his car seat, and all the way home. This was immediately after opening it when he joined it to trains they had already been playing with.

They love the coffee table for pretending their trains are falling off a ledge and will somehow make it to the other side. Another favorite is seeing how long of a train they can create with all the pieces they’ve been collecting.

Trains on a Play Mat

This is a little town play-mat that my husband’s uncles and grandfather made for him when he was a boy! We recently inherited it again when his grandparents downsized. I’m so impressed that Jer’s uncles thought of everything! I love the fire station, the hospital, the gas station, places to park… even a train track which the boys play trains on.

Learning With Trains

And other days they like to chillax after making a mess of the train tracks, and watch a movie about trains. I found a new Thomas movie from the library and that was a favorite of theirs for like 2 weeks haha. Yes, I now regrettably know all the songs—yet the happiness on my kiddos’ faces is worth it! Trains are also their favorite subjects in books! Their favorite titles at the moment are the Shine-a-light Inside Trains book we have, and The Little Engine that Could. I love that trains are great for kids’ imagination and learning.

I’m so glad we are able to enjoy this phase with two little boys around.

What things have you done with trains for your kids? Let me know if you have ideas so I can try them!

Love, Kat
