The Case for a Lucky Charm

We had one of those pleasant surprises where my sister hopped on a train and spent a night with us!

I think my sister Adelyn is a Lucky Charm. Maybe a Mary Poppins, complete with powers and a rather large carpet bag. Hear me out…

Item 1: The phone charging port is definitely broken in the van, and has been for years. However, the moment my sis needs to charge her phone she happens to find a charging cord compatible with her phone right there, and the charging works with no explanation.

Item 2: Our teenage daughter we are prying info from is a free flowing open book with her. Inexplicable.

Adelyn gifted L some heatless hair curler thing-a-majig just because. She saw it and remembered L’s interest in doing her own hair. It was so thoughtful and made L feel so special and seen.

L’s no-heat curls, Helping F record his song, Jer made us delicious John Wayne lemon pancakes with blueberry sauce, F delighted with recording, Sisters happen to be matching in Beatles shirts and green lounge pants

Item 3: This is something Jer and I could never have done, and Adelyn was uniquely qualified to make this such a special experience for our son. I’m so thankful to her for even thinking of it! She gave F a seriously amazing gift for his belated birthday—a chance to record the song he made up “Skateboarding on a Seesaw” using all the equipment she brought with her. She is a professional musician and knows her stuff!

F felt so proud working on his song, having his Aunt teach him and bring his music to life. He’s exploring Creative career ideas, so getting to see how it all works behind the scenes was so cool for him.

She even took W aside and made belated birthday plans with him, too. I was not privy to that conversation, so it’s a surprise to me, but I’m sure it is exciting. Basically my kids are basking in all the time she has with us.

Item 4: The boys get so excited that she wants to play the games they want to play with them, and actually get along. During Summer break when they’ve been all in each other’s faces I’ve heard them bickering more than anything, so her stopping them without any separating or “talking to” is pretty fantastic.

Oh, and Item 5: My Baby who has long term feeding issues and oral aversion does the best he’s ever done by a long shot at Feeding Therapy when Adelyn’s there with us. Miss Nikki our feeding therapist said he has an audience to impress, haha. What am I, chopped liver?

I must be chopped liver.

But I will TAKE it if it means this kid is making any progress eating, and I will thank my sister for gracing us before the wind changes direction.

Love, -Kat
